For more than a thousand years, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan, and traces of its glorious past may be seen everywhere. With its thousands of red torii gates flowing through the hills, the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine is a symbol of both architectural beauty and spiritual devotion. Gion, Kyoto’s old neighbourhood, is a living picture of small cobblestone alleyways, traditional wooden machiya residences, and the odd glimpse of geisha walking gracefully to their appointments.
